Armed with options and resources once a week, Tema relentlessly crosses the point of entry in San Ysidro to Tijuana through heavy barbed wire fences, armed Border Patrol agents, and increasingly longer lines to support her clients.
We must do better by Black mothers and babies by mobilizing swiftly, acting resolutely, and implementing solutions that will reverse these deadly trends.
Simply put, we need more Black midwives.
I am clear.
We have failed Black student midwives, and unless we overhaul the educational institutions and preceptorships contracts which hold them financially hostage, we will continue to fail Black mothers and babies. Period.
